Day 5 – Thursday July 9th, 2015
Start Time: 09:15 End Time: 17:30
Miles Hiked: 17.1 Total Miles: 88.8
CT Sections: 6-0.0 > 6-17.1
After getting a hitch from Fairplay to the Kenosha Pass Trailhead from a nice guy named James who is training to be a ski guide in Steamboat, we signed the Colorado Trail log and hiked into a beautiful blue sky day. We decided early on to stop if it started raining or we got tired, but also wanted to put down some decent miles as section 6 is the longest at 32.7 miles. Along the way, we met Austin, Jen and Lindsay who are thru hiking and attending Colorado College together. We also met Shane and Steve who after thru hiking sections 1 through 5, decided to bike the remainder of the CT and were now pushing their mountain bikes up Georgia Pass. We like the idea of riding down, but pushing bikes up these narrow and steep trails doesn’t look like fun.
We crossed over Georgia Pass at 11,874 feet around 15:00 just as a brisk wind and light rain began. We hustled off the pass to reduce lightning danger and made for tree cover as the rain intensified. It rained off and on until we reached a campsite at 17.1 miles then rained for the remainder of the evening. The temperature dropped to the 30’s overnight and made for our coldest yet.
