Today was a much-needed “zero day”. Our shoes, socks, tent and gear were still wet from the nearly continual rain the previous two days, and more importantly our feet were in bad shape from sloshing for 20 plus miles. We spent our time in Fairplay doing laundry, eating real food, and blogging at the local library. We also peered into the 1860’s staged town of South Park that inspired the TV show “South Park”. T-shirt and memorabilia stores dotted main street to take advantage of Fairplay’s claim to fame.
In order to keep the room throughout the day, we stayed a second night at the Western Inn. We were happy to wait out the rain and have an extra night in a dry bed. We felt like pizza for dinner and were told to avoid Pizza Hut and other local pizzerias and pointed to a Sinclair gas station an eighth of a mile up the road. Despite our initial skepticism, we were impressed by the tastiness and quality of the custom pizza we ordered. After dinner, we spent more time drying our shoes with a hairdryer and loading our packs for hiking. We felt refreshed and ready to hit the trail again after our first off-trail day.
