Greyrock is a popular hike in Poudre Canyon only 40 minutes from Fort Collins, Colorado that climbs 2,039 feet in 3.1 miles. I had hiked to the 7,513 summit of Greyrock Mountain many times, but not since the High Park fire burned most trees in the area in June of 2012. Many parts of the trail felt familiar, but areas that were previously evergreen tunnels now offered open views of meadows and hills filled with the black skeletons of charred trees.
We kept expecting rain as ominous dark clouds surrounded us for much of the hike, but received only a few short-lived warm sprinkles with raindrops that glistened like falling gems as they were hit with low angle light from the setting sun. As always, the rewarding view from the summit made the relatively steep hike worthwhile.
